Suffolk Construction Improves Productivity With Joint Field Solution From Motion Computing and Vela Systems
Burlington, MA and Austin, TX (PRWEB) April 3, 2008 -- Vela Systems, a developer of mobile field software for the architecture, engineering, contractor and owner (AECO) industry, today announced that Suffolk Construction used Motion Computing® tablet PCs outfitted with Vela Systems' software to streamline work list, punch list and other field processes to increase productivity and enhance work quality on the conversion of a historic Boston jail into the four-star Liberty Hotel.
Suffolk was attracted to the Vela-configured Motion? tablet's proven ability to work in real-time, shaving hours, days and potentially weeks of work time off construction projects. Also, Suffolk found Vela-configured Motion tablets much easier and more convenient to carry than the field notebooks and tubes of drawings traditionally used on work sites. The tablet's lightweight design, long battery life, and screen that is viewable even in direct sunlight, overcame issues that have long plagued other technologies on construction sites, providing Suffolk with optimum ease-of-use, reliability and convenience.
By using Vela Systems' software on Motion tablets, Suffolk Project Superintendents such as John Gillis were able to personally cut their work-time in half. Previously, Gillis needed to capture field notes on-site on paper floor plans, transpose the data into a computer back at his office, make photocopies of the marked up plans, and then distribute the information to all involved; a process that entailed hours of work each day.
With the Vela-configured Motion tablet, Gillis had electronic copies of all floor plans available to him in the field, allowing him to mark the precise locations and responsibilities of all work and punch list items that he encountered. Upon returning to the office, the information could then instantly be sent to all job participants automatically. As a result, Gillis has been able to finish these tasks in half the time. Such time savings are typical with the solution and customers routinely report savings of five to 10 hours per week per person, accelerating project delivery by up to two days per month, resulting in tremendous cost savings.
Equally important, Vela Systems' software has enabled Suffolk to be the master of all project information, enabling all parties involved to collaborate and automatically synchronize multiple versions of the same document for even greater time savings and quality control.
